Premonition

This video is funny, but scary all at the same time. I'm not sure I'm ready for all this. Dear Lord, help us all. Thanks, Heather, for sending this to me. You can't say you didn't warn me.

John said he felt a little sick to his stomach when he saw this auction on ebay.

Saying Goodbye to an Icon

This was the emblem on the metal cabinets in our kitchen. I will have to say that I did like that metal cabinet. It had that retro feel that I enjoy. Anyway, after doing some research, and reading this story online about the history of kitchens, the Tracy customized metal cabinets in the 1950s were state of the art. The article says they even had Tracy metal cabinets in the White House. How's that for style?

So, it makes sense to me now, that when Joe and John put the big metal cabinet out by the dumpster at 9 a.m., and John and I left to go to Home Depot at 10:20 a.m., the Tracy metal cabinet was gone. I hope someone can make some use out of it, even though one of the doors kept falling off, and we still have one of the drawers sitting next to me on the floor in the office.

It makes me wonder how long these cabinets we are installing will remain in this house. 50 years?

Slow But Sure

John and I seem to plan household projects around busy times in our lives, and now that we're in the thick of it, I'm annoyed that our previous engagements are keeping us from progressing on the kitchen. This week we were both busy on Monday, and Wednesday evening, and I worked late on Thursday evening, so that really only left Tuesday to get anything done. And so, we hung the cabinet above the refrigerator. Friday night John had a football game, and we had B&B guests, and then yesterday we were home for about an hour before we had to go pour wine all evening in St. Charles. This morning we were able to get a little done before the days events sweep us off in other directions again. The pictures show the two corners of our kitchen, before and after we placed the floor cabinets. John needs to cut a hole in the cabinet under the sink for the water, and then we need to talk to someone to help us with the countertop and we will probably need help with installing the dishwasher, which goes in between the lazy susan and the sink. The next like 5 weekends we are booked solid, so here's hoping we can get a lot accomplished during the workweek.

Back Up

We called for back up on this kitchen project, and they came in, and progress was made. So far today John and I hung one cabinet before they got here, then Joe, Brian, and John hung five more cabinets. Very exciting. The corner cabinet was very heavy, so I'm giving props to my homeboys on that one, and all of them really. Becky and Ruthie and I put two more floor cabinets together, so all the cabinets are together now, they just all need to find a home in their proper place in the kitchen.

So, this is where we stand tonight. All wall cabinets but one hung; the one above the refrigerator. All other cabinets that we have doors for have the doors on them. We had to order a few doors because they didn't have them in stock, but they should be here sometime this week. AND, we even have stuff behind those doors, and that might be the most fun part. It's like unpacking your stuff when you get a new place.

Still plenty to do, so if you are inclined to offer help, we'll gladly accept. We really can't thank Joe and Brian and Becky and Ruthie enough. We've got a busy week in front of us...we'll keep you posted.

A Real Source of Afternoon Irritation

So, we pulled the cabinets off the wall, and can't quite seem to figure out how to get it to look right to put the new cabinets up. The 2nd picture John is just holding the cabinet up there so we could visualize what needed to happen next. He's on his fourth trip to Home Depot of the day, and I'm waiting for pizza to be delivered. A little nourishment and we'll have all the wall cabinets hung this evening. ;)

After seeing the comment left on my belly picture update, I found this picture, and I wonder...Is Britney Spears pregnant also?

Progress has been made.

John and I are pretty excited to have this small part finished. Two wall cabinets hung; seven to go, and that doesn't even include the floor cabinets. Even in this small area, there is still lots to do, including door hardware, and we are planning to paint the stove white, instead of the nasty avocado green that it is now. Plus, we hope to do crown molding maybe next year.

We have all next weekend wide open, and help on the way...so stayed tuned for frequent updates.

Here's a belly update. It's definitely bigger now. I'm just starting my 24th week, which I guess makes me starting my 6th month. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, but so far everything is going well. I can feel her move around a lot, and even John has felt it a time or two. Just in the last couple days my fingers have begun to swell so that my rings feel tight. Hopefully cooler weather will make that go away. I feel weird walking around all pregnant without a wedding ring on.

Root, Root, Root for the Cardinals.

You know we can't go to a Cardinal's game without sharing some pictures. This time we sat in the bleachers, and John hates the bleachers, but I was happy to have a good view of Jim Edmonds. The top picture is of Jim Edmonds catching a ball. The bottom picture is of me and Eckstein, well a cardboard figure of Eckstein. I found it amusing that I was taller than him. The game was hot, and we both got a little sunburned, but we came home with a win, and that's all that counts.

Just In Case You Were Wondering...

I have eaten spaghetti 5 times in the past 8 days.

I have almost singlehandedly eaten 2 cantaloupes and 2 orange fleshed honeydews in the past month.

I have dreams when I'm taking a nap of Cool Ranch Doritos.

I day dream about Magic Shell chocolate topping for my ice cream.

And other random things I have bought recently that I never buy include:
oreos, ice cream sandwiches, chocolate covered frozen bananas, twinkies, orange push up pops, and bean sprouts.

Suggested Outcome

These are the cabinets we purchased. I'm so excited about this project. We still have a lot to buy including a new sink, the DISHWASHER, faucet, countertops, "toe kick" bottom part of the cabinets, hardware, maybe a disposal. I dream day and night of open, clean, pristine counter top and John frets night and day about how to install it all.

An Even Better Place

The good news is we are getting a new kitchen. This project began last year when we wanted to add a dishwasher. Instead, I realized that the charming metal cabinet with attached sink and faucet that I liked so much when we bought this house became a thorn in my side. We can't just take one side of the cabinet near the sink out and replace it with a dishwasher because it's all one piece. Since our kitchen is only 10' x 10', getting all new cabinets last year seemed just out of our reach financially. Can't say the same about this year, though. =) Over the weekend we purchased cabinets that you assemble yourself. It's a pretty ambitious task in front of us, especially when you look at all those boxes sitting in the garage waiting to be put together, but I am so excited.

Soon gone are the days of dirty dishes piling up on the only counter space we have.

Soon gone are all our appliances and big bowls sitting under the island inviting Char to play,

and speaking of Char, this picture shows one cabinet door that has fallen off and we can't get back on, and we usually leave it off, except when company comes over.

Last time Char was here, he pulled it off; uncovered our secret. Then I tried to quickly put it back on, and didn't do it right, and it fell on Brian's toe. Sorry Brian. So embarrassed. As you can see in one of the pictures, we put one of the cabinets together already, except for the door.

We're going to try to put as many together as we can, then buy a DISHWASHER! and order countertops and try to knock it all out in a weekend. I told you we are ambitious. All this leads to a household debate. (how could it not?) One of us feels that if we are going through all this trouble, we should buy and put in a waste disposal in the sink, and the other one of us feels they are unnecessary and hard to install.

Crafty

One of my many projects I'm in the middle of right now is this rug project for the baby's room. Becky has convinced me that if I buy this fleece, and cut it up in little strips, that it will turn into a rug, similar to the last picture. She is doing one too, and she has a small head start on me.
Looks like I have a lot of cutting and pulling to do.
