Dinner Conversation

As mentioned in the last post, we are entering the world of sippy cups. The one Cecilia used tonight has Ariel, Flounder and Sebastian on it from The Little Mermaid. On the side it says, "Life is the Bubbles" which I told John is a line from the song Under the Sea. John said he thought I was too into the Little Mermaid and referenced a recent conversation where I said I would name our next girl Ariel, a name he vetoed promptly, just like he vetoes every other name I suggest. He said he had seen Beauty and the Beast in the theatre, which came out in 1991. Let me mention that he was a junior in high school in 1991.

So I ask you this very important question...

I was actually a Senior when it came out. Everybody knows that Beauty and the Best is the only animated film to be nominated for the "Best Picture" academy award. Little Mermaid is ok, but it isn't better than even The Lion King or Aladdin. It's the fourth best Disney film at best.

    IMDB ratings-
    The Lion King-8.1
    Beauty and the Beast-8.0
    Aladdin-7.8
    The Little Mermaid-7.4

The film focuses on how little girls need to change their appearance in order to find true love and should rebel against the wishes of their parents, while Beauty and the Beast shows that it's good to make sacrifices to help someone you love and true love can look beyond the superficial and even happen to someone labeled a beast.
Menken's score is clearly superior in Beauty and the Beast as well. The evidence here is irrefutable, however, some people's judgment is clouded by nostalgia of watching the first animated disney film in almost 20 years as little girls. If an honest side by side comparison were made today, Beauty and the Beast is clearly superior.

This is what John does on a snow day. Let's hope warm weather returns soon.
