An Even Better Place
The good news is we are getting a new kitchen. This project began last year when we wanted to add a dishwasher. Instead, I realized that the charming metal cabinet with attached sink and faucet that I liked so much when we bought this house became a thorn in my side. We can't just take one side of the cabinet near the sink out and replace it with a dishwasher because it's all one piece. Since our kitchen is only 10' x 10', getting all new cabinets last year seemed just out of our reach financially. Can't say the same about this year, though. =) Over the weekend we purchased cabinets that you assemble yourself. It's a pretty ambitious task in front of us, especially when you look at all those boxes sitting in the garage waiting to be put together, but I am so excited.
Soon gone are the days of dirty dishes piling up on the only counter space we have.
Soon gone are all our appliances and big bowls sitting under the island inviting Char to play,
and speaking of Char, this picture shows one cabinet door that has fallen off and we can't get back on, and we usually leave it off, except when company comes over.
Last time Char was here, he pulled it off; uncovered our secret. Then I tried to quickly put it back on, and didn't do it right, and it fell on Brian's toe. Sorry Brian. So embarrassed. As you can see in one of the pictures, we put one of the cabinets together already, except for the door.
We're going to try to put as many together as we can, then buy a DISHWASHER! and order countertops and try to knock it all out in a weekend. I told you we are ambitious. All this leads to a household debate. (how could it not?) One of us feels that if we are going through all this trouble, we should buy and put in a waste disposal in the sink, and the other one of us feels they are unnecessary and hard to install.

Please tell John to be careful...this isn't a saxophone you are dealing with.
By the way, go for the garbage disposal.

After living in an apartment without a garbage disposal for a year I'm soooo happy to have one again.
I saw that you were quoted in an article in the Missourian about the lack of grapes this year.

That disposal might be a pain for an afternoon's installation, but it'll be so much less hassle for many afternoons/mornings/evenings to come! BTW--I really admire you guys for all of the DIY projects you do to your house. We are not that handy and there's a reason why we had our house built. cori

The problem with the disposal is not the afternoon installation. It's the fact that there is no place, and I mean zero, to put the switch. The walls are plaster and tile. I'm not interested in replastering a wall to put in a disposal. Cori-Steve's an electrician, is there a problem installing the switch inside the cabinate underneath the sink?

Steve said that it shouldn't be a problem to install the switch under the sink. If you guys are still planning on coming to the big birthday party on Saturday I'm sure he'll give you some tips.
