I really had to think about this one. I do not think they are the smae thing. Halfway there is where Tommy and Gina are right now...Livin' on a Prayer is their plan to make it I swear.
Sometimes I wonder if those two kids ever did make it...after all, it's been 20 years.
You see, I took a different route. I think that Tommy and Gina have a plan, their plan to make it, I swear. Let's say their plan is a ten (10) year plan. In order to achieve this goal of getting out of debt, owning their own home, and achieving the American Dream, they must currently "live on a prayer," which means to me living on not much else but a hope and a prayer. They are currently five (5) years through the plan and have fallen on tough times. The union has been on strike, Gina has been working at a diner. Times are tough. Tommy has had to pawn his guitar. Gina even thinks about leaving or "dreams of running away," but Tommy is there to reasure that everything will be OK, someday. I too, wonder if things ever were OK. I like to believe that these two (2) kids did just fine during the economic boom of the 1990's, perhaps opening their own business that will sell your stuff for you on ebay.
Actually, I just got a note from Tommy and Gina. They live in Glen Carbon now. Tommy does steel work (he worked on the new Busch Stadium, which he is very proud of) and Gina answers phones for AmerenUE. Little Tommy is a sophomore and plays baseball. Jenny is 12 and is the spitting image of her mother. She just started the flute this past year.
The family still goes camping at Mark Twain Lake every summer; the boys like to fish. They are not sure how that is going to work this year with Tommy's summer baseball schedule.
I know as recently as 1995 they were still having some trouble, as John has stated the the song "Lie to Me" is about them..
"Lie To Me"
Rumour has it that your daddy's coming down He's gonna pay the rent Tell me baby, is this as good as life is gonna get It feels like there's a stranger standing in these shoes But, I know I can't lose me, 'cause then I'd be losing you
I know I promised baby I would be the one to make our dreams come true I ain't too proud of all the struggles And the hard times we've been through When this cold world comes between us Please tell me you'll be brave 'Cause I can realize the danger when forgiveness fades away
If you don't love me - lie to me 'Cause baby you're the one thing I believe Let it all fall down around us, if that's what's meant to be Right now if you don't love me baby - lie to me
Pour another cup of coffee Babe I got something to say to you I ain't got the winning ticket Not the one that's gonna pull us through No one said that it'd be easy Let your old man take you home But know that if you walk out on me that darling I'd be gone
If you don't love me - lie to me 'Cause baby you're the one thing I believe Let it all fall down around us, if that's what's meant to be Right now if you can't love me baby - lie to me Baby, I can take it
It's a bitch, but life's a roller coaster ride The ups and downs will make you scream sometimes It's hard believing that the thrill is gone But we got to go around again, so let's hold on
If you don't love me - lie to me 'Cause baby you're the one thing I believe Let it all fall down around us If that's what's meant to be Right now if you can't love me baby - lie to me Lie to me Baby, I can take it C'mon lie to me
I'm glad you two are so willing to speculate on all this, but my main point, the point where John and I disagreed was that the state of "living on a prayer" is much further away from a goal than "halfway there" therefore the lyrics that say, "whoa we're halfway there, whoa, living on a prayer" are too different to be used so closely together.
As for Tommy and Gina, I heard they look happy together, but the reality is much different. So sad.
